On April 30, 2019, the Cajon Valley Union School Board presented certificates to more than 30 fourth-graders from Mrs. Lee’s class at Meridian Elementary School. The Board honored their work designing a new playground for the children at East County Transitional Living Center.

Earlier this year, the class met with the folks from Soul Pancake, an inspiring media and entertainment group in Los Angeles. Their motto is, “We Make Stuff That Matters.” The goal was for the fourth-graders to design a playground that would bring joy to the children living at ECTLC, and improve their community.

Local Allstate Insurance representatives provided the funding through their “Good Starts Young” program and went to work making the designs a reality. The children from Meridian Elementary saw their ideas come to life when the completed project included a small soccer field, swing set, tree-house, and other interactive installations.

During the presentation ceremony at the District offices, the entire Cajon Valley Unified School Board applauded the children, lined up to shake their hands, and passed out the awards.

We want to thank Mrs. Lee for inspiring her students to create such a thoughtful project for our kids. Also, we are grateful to Allstate and Soul Pancake for their contributions of time and treasure, making the new playground not just a dream, but a reality. For over 150 kids living at ECTLC, the play yard will be a place full of fun, laughter, and hope.
